Simple Tools for Recovery

Posted by gentlerecovery on April 9, 2010 at 9:09 PM

Acronoms are an easy way to remember some tools for recovery from an addiction.  An example is the word: HALT. Each letter stands for something to watch out for. Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. When you're tempted to reach for the 'addiction' think of the word HALT and ask yourself if you are too hungry, too angry, too lonely or too tired. If you feel any of these, go for a run, call a friend or lie down. Not only will it help you avoid using the will learn to take care of your needs instead of pushing them down.

You can do this with any word. For example the word LIFE can stand for Let go, Invest in yourself, Forgive your past and Expect the best.

HALT is great. I learned it years ago. It works for all kinds of things, not just addiction. It works for codependency issues, self-image issues... keeps your thinking straight.

Thanks for the reminder!
